The concert features Darius Klišys from Lithuania and Chicago’s own “Dainava” Lithuanian Chorale, directed by Darius Polikaitis. Klišys specializes in the performance of Baroque music on the birbynė, and in April of 2009, was one of 90 musicians selected to perform at Carnegie Hall with the YouTube Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
Tonight, birbynė and choir join forces to present works by Lithuanian composers Bajoras and Tamulionis, as well as masterpieces by Palestrina, Pergolesi, Handel, and Rutter. The evening also features works by budding Chicago area composers Kęstutis Daugirdas and Martynas Matutis, and culminates with the world premier of “Švilpynė” (The Whistle) by Lithuanian composer Nijolė Sinkevičiūtė.

In the fall of 1995, a group of friends got together to sing at a cultural evening presenting young Lithuanian talent. That event marked the beginning of the “Dainava” Men’s Octet, named after their affiliation with the “Dainava” Choral Ensemble. After years of successful performances and a best-selling CD, membership in the Octet changed as did the name to what is now called the “Dainava” Men’s Ensemble. For your listening pleasure, we present their latest CD, The Six.

We invite you to attend a concert “Per Tamsu” (trans. “Too Dark”) on Sunday, November 16, to be held in the Lithuanian World Center’s newly built Youth Hall. The list of performers include “Dainava” Choral Ensemble, “Spindulys” and “Grandis” Lithuanian folk dance ensembles, Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Mission children’s choir “Vyturys,” and the “Dainava” Men’s Ensemble. Proceeds will go to the Center’s Youth Hall lighting project. Lunch will be available for purchase beginning 12 p.m. Concert begins at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.
